Best Poses for Headshots (And Why They Work)

Here’s something no one tells you before a headshot session: posing isn’t about being photogenic—it’s about feeling comfortable, looking natural, and trusting your photographer (hi, that’s me).

And no, you don’t need to practice in the mirror or study YouTube videos titled “Power Poses for LinkedIn.” I’ll guide you the entire time. But if you’re curious what makes a pose work on camera, let’s break down what I look for—and how I make it feel easy, not awkward.

Still prepping? Make sure you read this post on skin & hair prep so you’re feeling ready from the neck up.

Chin, Shoulders, and Posture (Oh My)

The key to a great headshot isn’t a dramatic pose—it’s subtle positioning that makes you look confident, grounded, and camera-savvy without looking stiff.

  • Chin: A slight forward push elongates your neck and sharpens the jawline. It feels weird, but it photographs great.
  • Shoulders: Rolled back and relaxed. We’re avoiding the “tense job interview” hunch here.
  • Posture: Gentle tilt, slight lean. It creates depth and makes the image feel engaging—not like you’re stuck in a yearbook photo.

The Eyes Have It

Your eyes are the real stars. I’ll direct you to shift your gaze, soften your stare, and channel “I’ve got this” energy—because eyes that look engaged beat a forced smile any day.

We might do a few with a smile, a few with a neutral expression, and some with just a little upward eyebrow action (aka “smart but chill”). I’ll direct all of it—no mind reading required.

Angles Are Everything

Most people have a side that photographs just a bit better—and part of my job is spotting it instantly. We'll try different angles to see what brings out your strongest features.

This isn’t about hiding anything. It’s about highlighting what makes you look open, honest, and *you*, whether that’s full-on, three-quarter, or slightly turned with a side glance that says “I close deals before lunch.”

Expression: No Cheese, Please

Headshots aren’t about fake grins or overdone “professional energy.” They’re about believable expression. So we’ll work through:

  • Approachable & warm
  • Calm & grounded
  • Friendly but focused
  • And yes, your “let’s get hired” face

I’ll cue you throughout the shoot and react in real time so your expression shifts naturally. Think of it more like a conversation than a photoshoot. (With better lighting.)

You don’t need to know how to pose. You just need to show up.
I'll handle the angles, the vibe, and everything in between—so your headshots show the best version of who you already are. 🎯
