How Many Headshots Do You Really Need? (Spoiler: More Than One)

So you’ve booked your session and you're wondering: “Do I really need more than one headshot?” Short answer: Yes. Slightly longer answer: You probably need 2–4 if you’re an executive, and 3–6+ if you’re an actor or multi-hyphenate professional. Let’s break it down.

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

Different platforms, roles, and audiences call for different versions of you. Your LinkedIn headshot may not be the same one you use for your IMDb page. Your corporate website might need something polished and neutral, while your publicist wants a little personality.

This is especially true if you’re targeting professional headshots in Los Angeles where competition—and expectations—are high.

If You're an Actor...

Think of headshots as casting tools. You should have at least:

  • Commercial Look: Friendly, approachable, maybe jewel tones or brighter layers
  • Theatrical Look: Edgier, dramatic lighting, often darker tones
  • “Wildcard” Look: Something unique to your vibe—tattooed tech bro, yoga mom, period drama starlet, etc.
  • Full-Body or ¾ Option: Sometimes requested for background or lifestyle work

And if you’re auditioning often, it helps to have looks that span age range, character types, or current casting trends.

If You're a Business Professional...

For executives, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders, I recommend a mix of:

  • Primary Headshot: Clean, confident, versatile
  • Alternate Expression or Angle: Slight smile vs. serious. Landscape crop for banners or press kits
  • Environmental Option: Something a little looser in posture or backdrop for brand materials or social

If you’re part of a leadership team, having a cohesive but personalized headshot can help you stand out while still aligning with your brand. Check out some of my executive headshot examples here.

Need a second opinion? I’m always happy to help narrow it down or recommend which versions work best for which platforms.

Don’t limit yourself to one angle of your brand.
Whether you need actor headshots, branding portraits, or executive images in Los Angeles, I’ll help you get a gallery that works as hard as you do.
