How to Prepare for Your Headshot Session (Without Spiraling Into Camera Anxiety)

Headshot Prep · Client Experience · Los Angeles

Preparing for a headshot session should ideally involve hydration, decent sleep, and a few good wardrobe choices — not a complete psychological unraveling in front of your bathroom mirror the night before.

If you are preparing for professional headshots, there is a very good chance you are overthinking at least one of the following:

“What do I wear?” “Should I smile?” “What do I do with my hands?” “Do people normally know what their face looks like from multiple angles?”

The good news is that most clients feel this way before a session. The even better news is that you do not need to arrive already knowing how to pose, style yourself like a magazine editor, or transform into someone who naturally enjoys being photographed.

A strong headshot session is collaborative. Preparation helps — but perfection is not required.

The goal is not to become “photogenic.” The goal is to look comfortable, confident, and believable as yourself.

Start Preparing a Few Days Before

The best preparation usually happens gradually rather than all at once the night before your session.

A few days ahead of time:

Helpful Prep

  • Hydrate consistently
  • Get decent sleep
  • Steam or prepare wardrobe
  • Plan outfit combinations
  • Schedule grooming carefully
  • Gather inspiration if desired

Probably Avoid

  • Last-minute hair experiments
  • Extreme skincare treatments
  • Panic-shopping online
  • Overpacking 47 outfits
  • Trying to look like someone else

Consistency almost always photographs better than dramatic last-minute reinvention.

Wardrobe Matters — But Simplicity Usually Wins

The strongest headshot wardrobe is typically clean, fitted, timeless, and supportive of the face rather than visually distracting.

Solid colors, texture, layering, and simple silhouettes generally photograph beautifully. Tiny patterns, heavy logos, and overly trendy clothing often pull attention away from expression.

Hair, Makeup, and Grooming

Hair and makeup should usually feel like an elevated version of your normal appearance — not an entirely different person introduced halfway through the shoot.

Professional hair and makeup can help:

Benefits

  • Reduce shine
  • Even skin tone
  • Create camera-friendly finish
  • Improve consistency
  • Reduce stress during session

The Goal

  • Natural polish
  • Healthy appearance
  • Still recognizable
  • Comfort and confidence
  • Professional realism

As both a photographer and makeup artist, I generally recommend subtle grooming and camera-aware makeup rather than heavy correction.

You Do Not Need to Know How to Pose

Most clients are not models. They are actors, executives, entrepreneurs, creatives, students, consultants, or people who simply need strong professional images and would prefer not to think about their chin angle ever again afterward.

Posing guidance is part of the process.

During the session, direction is provided for posture, expression, body language, eye line, and positioning so clients never feel abandoned wondering how humans normally stand.

What to Bring to Your Session

Bring With You

  • A few wardrobe options
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Touch-up makeup if used
  • Lip balm
  • Water
  • Anything industry-specific

Most Important Thing

  • Arrive slightly early
  • Give yourself time to settle in
  • Trust the process
  • Stay flexible
  • Do not overanalyze every frame

The Session Itself

A professional headshot session is usually far more relaxed than clients expect.

Images are reviewed throughout the session so adjustments can happen in real time. Small refinements in posture, lighting, wardrobe, and expression often make a huge difference.

Most clients leave saying some version of: “I thought this was going to be way more awkward.”

That is generally the goal.
