Applying to Modeling Agencies: LA and NYC Submission Checklist
An agency application is a small, practical package: current images, accurate details and the information that particular office requests. It is not an audition for the world's longest introductory email.
This checklist is for adults beginning or updating modeling submissions in Los Angeles and New York. Use it alongside our Model Resources guide, which includes a filterable shortlist of 14 agencies and their published board evidence. The shortlist is not a ranking of booking volume or a promise that an agency is accepting your category today.
Step 1: Choose the relevant board
Start with the type of work you are pursuing: fashion and development, commercial and lifestyle, ecommerce, fit, beauty, activewear or a specialty such as parts. Agencies can operate several divisions with different needs and contacts.
Review the actual roster, location and application instructions. Ask whether you can realistically attend castings and work in that market. A New York page and an LA page may have different processes even when the agency name is the same.
Do not infer a universal body requirement from one fashion board. Sample requirements can be narrow; other boards serve different briefs. Equally, a diverse roster does not establish equal booking volume or that a specific opening exists.
Step 2: Verify the route
Find the submission page through the agency's official website. If someone contacts you through a social account, verify the person using independently located official contact details before sending sensitive information, traveling or paying.
Be careful with lookalike domains, outdated directories and screenshots of open-call notices. Check the current date, location, age requirements and whether an appointment is needed. A forwarded flyer is not a reservation.
The FTC's modeling scam guide identifies warning signs including guaranteed jobs, pressure to pay for representation and required in-house photographers. An agency application should not make you surrender your judgment at the door.
Step 3: Photograph what the form asks for
Start with accurate current digitals. Commonly useful preparation includes a clear face view, readable full length and whatever profiles or other angles the specific form requests. Do not turn that preparation list into a universal mandatory set.
Use simple clothing and clear light. Keep proportions honest, include the requested body area and avoid heavy retouching. A current phone photograph can be more useful for an initial application than an elaborate image that conceals your appearance.
Three official routes worth comparing
| Agency application | What to check on the live form | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Option: apply | Current city, division, images and information requested; its published phone-photo guidance | Professional photographs are not required for this initial application |
| STATE: become a model | Current image, hair, measurement and contact instructions | Its directions are specific to its submission process |
| Ford: get scouted | Current requested views and presentation guidance | Hair and image directions can differ from another agency's |
These routes were checked September 4, 2026. Read the current form before acting. We do not guarantee that the fields, eligibility or open-call status remain unchanged.
Our first portfolio guide explains when a produced working book becomes useful. Do not assume you need to purchase a large portfolio before making an application that asks for snapshots.
Step 4: Prepare accurate details
Record your actual measurements, age where requested, current city, availability, travel circumstances and relevant skills. Follow the form's units. Do not guess a smaller or larger number because it seems more appealing on a particular board.
List experience and training truthfully. Include professional links where requested, and make sure they open correctly. Use a contact address you check regularly. Keep government identifiers, banking details and other sensitive documents out of an initial submission unless a verified, legitimate process actually requires them at the appropriate stage.
Step 5: Send the right-sized package
Follow file type, image count, attachment size, naming and message requirements. A form asking for four images is not improved by sixteen surprise attachments. Review the complete application before sending and retain a record of what you submitted.
If an introductory note is requested, keep it useful: your name, current market, intended division, relevant availability and one accurate sentence about your background. The photographs and requested facts should be easy to find.
Your submission tracker
Use one row per application:
| Field | Record |
|---|---|
| Agency, city and board | The exact office and division |
| Verified route | Official URL or confirmed contact |
| Instructions checked | Date and any important requirements |
| Submitted | Date, file set and relevant message |
| Response | Actual reply, meeting request or no response |
| Follow-up | Only the timing and route permitted by the agency |
| Costs and next step | What is proposed, who pays and what you need to clarify |
Avoid repeated unsolicited follow-ups. Silence does not establish a reason for rejection or a judgment of your value. Review whether the target, materials and timing make sense, then continue a bounded plan rather than escalating spending out of frustration.
If an agency is interested
Before signing, ask which board and clients they would develop you for, who would handle your work and how development would proceed. Review commission, term, territory, exclusivity, expenses, payment, tests and termination terms.
New York's Fashion Workers Act and management responsibilities guidance provide official requirements for covered arrangements. For California, consult the DIR talent-agency resources where applicable. A recognizable logo does not replace checking the actual entity and agreement.
Use the guide's booking questions as a starting point for understanding work offers. An agency contract creates a relationship through which work may be pursued; it is not a salary or booking guarantee.
A useful first week
Choose a primary lane, identify a small relevant set of official routes, prepare the requested images and details, and set up your tracker. You can improve the materials as real feedback arrives.
If you want help creating consistent application photographs locally, see LA model digitals and current pricing. Keep the agency's own instructions as the brief. Parents should use the separate child modeling guide.
