Behind the Scenes: What Really Happens in a Headshot Session

Behind The Scenes · Headshot Sessions · Los Angeles

Most people arrive at a headshot session slightly nervous, mildly overpacked, and deeply convinced they are “bad at photos.” Almost all of them leave saying the experience was far easier than they expected.

If you have never had professional headshots before, it is completely normal to wonder what actually happens during a session. Clients often assume they need to know how to pose, bring a suitcase full of wardrobe options, or somehow transform into a naturally photogenic celebrity by sheer force of will.

Thankfully, that is not how this works.

A professional headshot session is designed to guide you through the process step by step — from wardrobe and lighting to posing, expression, and image selection.

If you are preparing for a session, you may also want to explore my Los Angeles headshots, actor headshots, and LinkedIn headshot sessions.

A great headshot session is less about “being photogenic” and more about feeling comfortable enough to look like yourself.

Before the Camera Even Comes Out

Most sessions begin with a conversation. We discuss goals, intended usage, wardrobe, styling, and the overall vibe you want your images to communicate.

An actor may need multiple looks for casting range. An executive may want something confident and approachable for LinkedIn or company branding. Entrepreneurs and creatives often want a mix of polished and editorial-style portraits.

This planning stage helps shape everything that follows.

Wardrobe Selection and Styling

One of the biggest misconceptions about headshots is that more clothing options automatically create better results. Usually the opposite is true.

The strongest headshots tend to come from clean, well-fitted wardrobe choices that support the face rather than compete with it.

What Works Well

  • Solid colors
  • Simple layering
  • Well-fitted clothing
  • Textures over busy patterns
  • Classic styles that age well

What Usually Does Not

  • Tiny distracting patterns
  • Wrinkled clothing
  • Overly trendy pieces
  • Large logos
  • Clothing that feels uncomfortable

Many clients also book professional hair and makeup services to simplify the process and ensure the final images look polished but still natural.

Lighting, Posing, and Direction

At my Downtown Los Angeles studio, I primarily use large soft studio lighting with natural light fill when conditions are right. The goal is flattering, dimensional light that works across different skin tones, face shapes, and industries.

Most clients are not professional models — and they do not need to be.

A major part of the session is guidance. I direct posture, angles, expression, body positioning, eye line, and subtle adjustments throughout the shoot so clients never feel abandoned in front of the camera wondering what their hands are doing.

Because honestly, nobody knows what their hands are doing.

Expression Is Everything

The technical side matters, but expression is usually what makes a headshot memorable.

A strong headshot should feel approachable, believable, confident, and emotionally connected to the viewer. That is why conversation and pacing matter during the session.

The goal is not stiff perfection. The goal is authenticity with intention.

Reviewing Images Together

During the session, clients review images in real time so adjustments can be made immediately if needed. This helps refine wardrobe choices, expression, lighting, and overall direction while the shoot is still happening.

Most people are surprised by how subtle changes in posture, chin angle, eye connection, and expression can dramatically change how a headshot feels.

Retouching and Final Delivery

After image selections are made, final retouching refines distractions while maintaining realism. The goal is not to erase personality or texture. The best retouching should still look human.

Final images are delivered digitally and optimized for professional usage including LinkedIn, company websites, casting platforms, social media, press features, and personal branding.
